WHY TAKT 3D

Why Teams Choose Us for Scanning

Parametric CAD, Not Just a Mesh

Most scanning shops hand off a messy STL. We deliver a clean, parametric STEP file that your engineering team can actually edit, dimension, and drawing-revise.

Sub-Millimeter Accuracy

Structured-light and handheld blue-light scanning hold ±0.1 mm on typical parts and ±0.05 mm on critical features — good enough for mating surfaces and press fits.

Scan-to-Print Under One Roof

Scan, model, print, and produce — all in the same San Diego shop. No hand-offs between a scanning vendor, a CAD shop, and a printer who don't talk to each other.

Legacy & Obsolete Parts

We specialize in discontinued spares, vintage vehicle parts, and legacy industrial components where the original drawings are long gone.

On-Site Scanning in San Diego

Large, fixed, or too-delicate-to-ship parts can be scanned at your facility. We bring the scanner to you anywhere in the San Diego metro area.

Inspection-Grade QC Reports

Overlay a scan of your as-built part onto the original CAD for color-mapped deviation analysis. Catch warpage, shrinkage, and assembly drift before they ship.

APPLICATIONS

What We Scan

Legacy & Discontinued Part Replication

Replace out-of-production spares for equipment, vintage vehicles, and industrial machinery. We scan the original, rebuild it in CAD, and print or produce the replacement.

Reverse Engineering

Turn a physical part with no drawings into a fully parametric CAD file. Your engineering team gets an editable model ready for downstream design work.

Inspection & Dimensional QC

Compare an as-built part against the original CAD. Output includes a color-mapped deviation heatmap so tolerance issues are visible at a glance.

Design Iteration from Physical Mockups

Prototyped a part by hand or with clay? We scan it, convert it to clean CAD, and hand it back ready for CNC, injection molding, or 3D printing.

PROCESS

How a Scanning Job Works

01

Drop Off or Schedule On-Site

Bring the part to 7940 Silverton Ave Ste 216, San Diego, or book an on-site visit for parts that can't be moved. No prep work required — we handle any needed scan spray.

02

Capture & Align

Multiple scan passes from every angle, aligned in software to a single watertight point cloud. Critical features get higher-resolution follow-up scans.

03

Convert to Parametric CAD

We rebuild the geometry as a clean, feature-tree CAD model in Fusion 360 or SolidWorks. You get an editable STEP file — not a tangled mesh you can't modify.

04

Deliver & Optionally Print

Final STEP and STL files delivered by email. If the goal is a replacement part, we can run it straight onto our in-house FDM farm on the same ticket.

Scanning usually leads to a CAD modeling and drawings handoff. Once the model is ready, print the replacement on our in-house FDM farm or run it as a low-volume production batch.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is 3D scanning for reverse engineering?

Our structured-light and blue-light scanners hold ±0.1 mm accuracy on typical parts and ±0.05 mm on critical features. Point spacing goes down to 0.05 mm, which captures detail finer than the human eye can resolve. That is plenty of accuracy for mating surfaces, press fits, and most engineering applications.

What types of parts can you 3D scan?

We scan anything from coin-sized parts up to full car bodies. Common requests include legacy machinery components, vintage vehicle parts, medical and prosthetic fit surfaces, industrial equipment, consumer products, and art or artifact replication. Dark, glossy, or transparent surfaces may need a temporary scanning spray, which we apply and remove at no extra cost.

Do I get a CAD file or just a mesh?

Most scanning shops hand off a raw STL mesh that is hard to edit. We go further — we rebuild the geometry as a clean, parametric CAD model in Fusion 360 or SolidWorks and deliver a STEP file with an editable feature tree. Your engineering team can actually modify, dimension, and drawing-revise it. Raw mesh formats (STL, OBJ, PLY) are also included if you need them.

How long does a 3D scanning and reverse engineering job take?

Typical turnaround is 2–5 business days from drop-off to CAD delivery. A simple geometric part can be done in 24 hours; a complex organic shape with fine detail and full parametric reconstruction may take a week. Rush service is available for urgent legacy-part requests.

Can you scan parts on-site if I can't ship them?

Yes. For large, fixed, delicate, or otherwise non-shippable parts, we bring the scanner to your facility anywhere in the San Diego metro area. Common on-site jobs include installed industrial equipment, vehicles, architectural features, and parts too heavy to move.

How much does 3D scanning cost?

Scanning-only jobs typically start around $150 for a small part with a mesh output. Full reverse engineering to a parametric CAD file runs $350–$1,500 depending on complexity and how much feature-tree reconstruction is needed. Contact us with the part details for an exact quote — most scans are cheaper than a single CAD-from-scratch hour.
